Stox

It’s been a busy morning. There’s been a setback at the newest construction site, and I’m stuck working until the sun is high above my head. My stomach grumbles, and I realize I haven’t eaten yet.

Which means I also haven’t seen Lara yet today.

After I order everyone to take a break to get something to eat, I head back to the breeding quarters only to be told by one of the guards that Lara hadn't returned yet. Ah, yes. She told me she wished to talk to the doctor and scientists and the other females who had married Novans.

I turn around, intent on having my driver take me to the hospital when another centuricmobile pulls up and Lara climbs out.

As casually as I can, I stroll over to her. “Lara, I was wondering if you would like to join me for lunch.”

It takes her a moment to meet my gaze. Her eyes look sorrowful, but she nods. “I would like that.”

“Great.”

I place my hand on the small of her back and guide her inside. For the most part, I’ve been very careful to not touch her at all, but I have to. Not being able to see her this morning affected me more than I realized.

Lara doesn’t shy away from my touch. If anything, she walks at my pace, staying close to me, maybe even closer than she had to. I’m not going to complain.

By now, most of the other women have already eaten and left the dining area. We send our order to the chefs, and once our trays are brought to us and the chefs retreat back to their kitchen, we’re completely alone.

I inhale my food. In between bites, I tell her about the new site and how slowly it was going.

“It’s frustrating,” I say. “Nothing ever goes smoothly.”

“You had issues with other sites?” she asks.

“Small matters mostly. It took us some time to recognize the best way to bring the water up from beneath the soil. We can’t build over the underground lakes or ponds.”

“Why do you think the rocks there are so brittle compared to other locations?”

“I don’t know. I plan on asking Dariox to check out samples.”

“Good idea.” She shoves some of her meat around on her plate.

“What’s wrong?”

Lara doesn’t look up. “I’m to leave.”

“Leave and go where?”

“I need to return to Earth.” She puts down her fork and meets my gaze.

I hold still. As much as I wish I misheard her, I know I didn’t. “When exactly will you be leaving?”

“I talked to my pilot. He won’t be ready to leave for two days.”

I nod numbly. She’s leaving.

I don’t want her to.

Fleetingly, I think about locking her away, capturing her, doing whatever it takes to make her fall in love with me so she’ll stay willingly…

But I can’t. I won’t. She’s a captain too, and I respect her too much for that.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t want her to stay, and it doesn’t mean that I don’t want her. I do. So ovian badly.
